As we near the end of January I find myself counting down the days until we have spring like weather again. This time of year, is so long for me. I do not like the cold, the days are short and where I live there is very little sunshine. I honestly think if we had more sunny days, even if it's cold it would be better. I feel like I have no energy and just want to go home and sit by the warm fire.
Someday, when I retire, I'm moving further south. I love the sunshine and being able to be outside to ride my bike, go for a walk or swim. The sun seems to reenergize me.
As I sit and write this, the sun just came streaming in my window. Which makes me smile, like the universe heard me. Can I request more sunny days?
Every year, I think about what I can do to keep busy through the long winter months. Being bored is not good, mostly for those around me. I've been like this since I was a child. Luckily, I have learned how to entertain myself, most of the time.
I have several different projects that I switch between. As you can see on my page I like to bake. I don't claim to be a great baker but I do enjoy baking occasionally.
Planning small trips, that I can look forward to throughout the winter is helpful as well. Many are just short day trips. Although, if I can figure out how to go to Florida during a break, I do that as well as it seems to recharge me.
In the past I used to knit and crochet. When my kids were younger, I would make them sweaters and dresses for their dolls. As they have gotten older I have done less knitting and crocheting.
As we all know exercise it important so I also try to ride my indoor bike. I'm not always a committed to this as I should be. It's not nearly as fun as riding my bike outside. Being outside on my bike with the wind blowing through my hair and the sun shining is so liberating.
Reading is also a great escape for me. When the winter really starts to get long I read books about places on the coast with sunshine and warm weather. I read every night before I fall asleep. What I love most about books is that I can be anywhere in the world in any time period.
How about you? Do you feel like winter is long and gray? What do you do to keep busy in the winter?
