Why I Help Families Travel Gluten-Free: My Journey with Celiac Disease, Disney, Cruises, and Family Travel

Travel has always been one of my greatest passions. I now have the opportunity to combine that passion with another important part of my life: helping families.

While I continue to work as a school counselor, I also help families plan vacations that fit their unique needs, including those navigating celiac disease, food allergies, and gluten-free travel.

For the past 25 years, I've worked with children and teens ages 5 through 18, helping students build confidence, learn self-advocacy skills, and overcome challenges. Those same skills help me as a travel advisor. Every family is different, and every traveler deserves a vacation that feels safe, enjoyable, and stress-free.

My Celiac Disease Diagnosis Changed the Way I Traveled

When my daughter and I were diagnosed with Celiac disease, I wasn't sure what travel would look like anymore.

Learning to live gluten-free meant reading labels, understanding cross-contact, asking questions at restaurants, and constantly thinking about food safety. The idea of traveling with celiac disease felt overwhelming.

Would we be able to find safe restaurants? Could we travel internationally? Would family vacations still be enjoyable?

Over time, we learned how to navigate life gluten-free, but it wasn't until we discovered Disney that our confidence as gluten-free travelers truly began to grow.

Why We Fell in Love with Disney World Again

A few years after our diagnosis, someone told me that Disney World was one of the best destinations for gluten-free dining.

As a lifelong Disney fan, I immediately started researching Disney's allergy-friendly dining options and planning a trip for our family.

What we experienced changed everything.

For the first time since her diagnosis, my daughter could order chicken fingers and fries just like other kids. She didn't feel different. She didn't feel left out. She simply got to be a kid. As a parent, that moment was priceless.

Disney's allergy protocols, dedicated preparation procedures, and knowledgeable Cast Members gave our family something we hadn't felt in a long time: the ability to relax.

Instead of worrying about food, we focused on making memories.

That first trip completely changed our perspective on gluten-free travel, and we've returned many times since.

Why Gluten-Free Cruises Work So Well for Families

As our confidence grew, we started exploring other ways to travel safely with celiac disease.

We discovered cruising.

Not all cruise lines handle gluten-free dining the same way, which is why choosing the right cruise line matters. The best cruise lines have well-established procedures for accommodating gluten-free guests, allowing meals to be planned in advance and ensuring dining staff understand dietary restrictions. That level of preparation and awareness can provide peace of mind for families traveling with celiac disease.

Cruises also offer something that families often need: flexibility.

Parents can relax, children can enjoy age-appropriate activities, and everyone can spend quality time together without the stress of constantly searching for safe places to eat.

For many families managing celiac disease, gluten-free cruises can be one of the easiest ways to travel.

Traveling Internationally with Celiac Disease

As my daughters got older, we expanded our travels and returned to Europe and the United Kingdom.

What surprised me most was discovering that eating gluten-free in many parts of Europe was actually easier than it is in the United States.

Countries throughout the European Union and the United Kingdom have strict allergen labeling laws that make identifying safe foods much easier.

During our travels, we found excellent gluten-free options throughout England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Paris.

Those experiences opened our eyes to what was possible. Traveling internationally with celiac disease requires preparation, but it is absolutely achievable. In many destinations, gluten-free awareness is widespread, making dining out less stressful than many travelers expect.

Why I Help Families Plan Gluten-Free Vacations

Now that my daughters are nearly grown and preparing for college, I want to help other families experience the same confidence that travel has given ours.

I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel to plan a vacation when you or your child has celiac disease.

Questions about food safety, cross-contact, restaurants, snacks, airports, hotels, cruises, and theme parks can quickly take the excitement out of trip planning.

That's where my experience can help.

As both a school counselor and someone living with celiac disease, I understand how important it is to feel informed, supported, and prepared.

Whether you're planning a Disney vacation or considering a cruise, I want families to know that safe and enjoyable travel is absolutely possible.

Because having celiac disease should never stop anyone from seeing the world.

If you're dreaming about your next gluten-free cruise, I'd love to help you find the perfect itinerary and navigate the gluten-free options available onboard. Contact me today and let's start planning a cruise where the only thing you need to worry about is which dessert to try next!
